Unfair advantages in the digital world

When an individual or team says they have an “unfair advantage” for building their business, the instant reaction is to assume they possess some kind of tech, or sneaky way of arbitraging a nascent opportunity to find customers. The truth is, these are mainly commodities now. As soon as someone knows the tech exists, it’s a product, and you can buy it. As soon as an arbitrage opportunity rears its head, everyone piles on, ruins the channel, and people move on. (It’s a race to nowhere.)

The truly unfair advantages sound like the stuff we should be teaching our kids:

Creativity.

Self-Awareness.

The willingness to be bored.

The time to think deeply and not stuff a screen in your face.

The excitement of what could be, and the visualizing of it, too. (Imagination.)

These things are actual unfair advantages. These things don’t depend on tech or on clever hacks. They depend on you.

YOU are your unfair advantage. The only real question is: Are you using it fully in your work?

Forget the stuff we assume brings us an advantage. Focus on the list above. Work on those things proactively, and find time to do so, and you’ll have your advantage.
