Offense vs. defense

All projects and jobs have elements of offense and defense, proactive things you do and reactive.

When something tips towards playing more defense, where you’re constantly on your heels, reacting—especially for a long period of time—that’s a sign. It might be time to make a change, or to get out. It might be time to start fresh.

When you’re unsure if a change is needed, try weighing these two things against each other: How much do you feel you’re on offense versus defense? Too much of the latter, and you’re never able to do your best work or feel more fulfilled. Then, make every attempt necessary to get back to being proactive.

Proactive work is better work, and it leads to a better life.
