How leaders start
Say what others are thinking but hesitate to say.
Raise your hand and point out that something is broken. Pay careful attention to what your intuition is urging you to try and how it clashes with what convention dictates. Identify the unspoken … then say it out loud.
If you do, others will turn your way. If you can continue to talk about it smartly and consistently and in a way that invites people over to contribute, others will shift from glancing your way to wandering over. And if you can then switch from talking about what’s broken to showing others a better way, they will have gone from glancing at you to wandering over to shouting, “Heck yes!” and sprinting towards that better way with you. And it’s that visible sign of momentum that creates a movement.
But it all starts with you being willing to lead. Raise your hand. Write your ideas. Speak your mind.
Say what others are thinking but hesitate to say. They’re waiting for it. Now it’s up to you.
