Have a plan to break the plan

It’s the weirdest thing about interviews and narrative style content: having a plan requires you to research and write for hours, all the while knowing you’ll probably ditch more than half the plan. Nowhere else have I found this same willingness to toss out tons of work at a moment’s notice, yet once something more interesting arises, it’s imperative to pursue that during a shoot or recording or interview.

Eisenhower famously said that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable. In creative work, it’s the exact same thing. The muscle memory you develop helps you react in the moment, armed with options that inform even the impromptu ideas.

UPDATE: here is the corrected link to join me, producer Tyler Bouchard, and director of photography Travis Wilber as we take you behind-the-scenes in the making of our new docuseries, Against the Grain. It’s free to join, though we suggest watching Episode 1 featuring Death Wish Coffee beforehand.
